Former world heavyweight champion reveals the identity of the only current fighter capable of defeating Prime Mike Tyson

James Buster Douglas shocked the world when he stopped Mike Tyson in 1990 to become Undisputed Heavyweight Champion.

Around a 37/1 underdog on the night in Tokyo, Douglas survived a knockdown in the eighth to score a TKO victory in the tenth, delivering ‘Iron’ Mike his first loss. Douglas would lost the titles to Evander Holyfield in his next outing.

With an extra major belt now, Oleksandr Usyk is the sole ruler in the division. The Ukrainian recently toppled previously-undefeated Tyson Fury to win a points decision and add the WBC belt to his collection already consisting of the IBF, WBA and WBO won from Anthony Joshua.

Those three men are considered the elite today, but Douglas, in an interview with Gambling Zone, said they wouldn’t have stacked up well in his day – at least the two Brits.

“I speak to my trainer about today’s heavyweights and he has a low opinion of them and says they [Fury and AJ] wouldn’t have been in the top 30 in my era, I have to agree. They have skills, but as far as endurance, I don’t know. They don’t seem to be able to withstand power and aggressiveness.”

Asked who would have the best chance against the ferocious Mike Tyson, Buster said Usyk.

“I would say Usyk would have had the best chance to beat Mike, then AJ, but Mike was a tough individual.”

Despite giving second spot to Joshua, he went on to say it would likely be an easy night’s work for ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet.’

“All of Mike’s opponents were easy for him until he fought me. Joshua is no different than anybody else, so yes, Joshua would have been an easy fight for Mike.”

Usyk and Fury run it back on December 21 this year, whilst Joshua is slated to return in September at Wembley Stadium with an opponent to be announced this month.
