Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has expressed his respect for Jake Paul’s upcoming and highly debated fight with Mike Tyson.
The iconic heavyweight Tyson is set to face off against the influencer-turned-boxer Paul on July 20 at the massive Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas, which can host up to 80,000 fans. Tyson, who last fought professionally in 2005 when he retired mid-fight against Kevin McBride, will take on Paul, who has amassed a record of 9-1 since beginning his boxing career four years ago.
Despite having a rocky relationship and multiple spats with Paul over the years, Mayweather acknowledged the business acumen behind Paul’s fight with Tyson. “What he’s doing is kinda cool. If he can continue to steal money and they match him the way they match him, I can’t knock his hustle,” Mayweather expressed during an interview with Treasure Hustle. He added, “If they can match him the way that they have been, more power to him.”
Earlier this week, Tyson experienced a health scare while flying, feeling dizzy and nauseous due to an ulcer flare-up. However, the former champ has reassured fans he’s recovered and confirmed the fight with Paul is still on.
The Tyson-Paul showdown is scheduled for eight two-minute rounds, with both fighters wearing 14oz gloves. Tyson’s last appearance in the ring was an eight-round exhibition match with Roy Jones Jr., which wasn’t officially scored, taking place four years ago. That fight card also featured Paul, where he famously knocked out NBA star Nate Robinson.
‘Iron Mike’ Tyson has been cautioned about the dangers of stepping back into the ring. Nathan Howarth from the Concussion Legacy Foundation UK highlighted the risks, saying, “Boxing has an inherent risk of concussion; there’s an increased risk of traumatic brain injury like bleeds on the brain. I’m not saying there is any evidence that as an older fighter, Mike would be at risk of that; however, we do know the impacts of subclinical concussions. It’s particularly important for someone like Mike Tyson, who has had a long period of time in the sport anyway.”
Despite these warnings, the Tyson-Paul fight is set to be a major event, with fans eagerly anticipating the outcome of this unique and controversial bout.
