Formula 1 is currently considering a significant calendar change, with the introduction of a rookie sprint race after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The proposed race would give young drivers an opportunity to showcase their talent in a competitive setting, but the idea has sparked differing opinions from drivers Max Verstappen and George Russell.

While George Russell supports the initiative, calling it a “good idea” to help rookies gain more track time, Max Verstappen, the reigning three-time world champion, holds a vastly different view. Verstappen dismissed the proposal, stating bluntly: “Not my problem. I’m on holidays. I don’t think everyone is excited after the final race to then do another race on Tuesday. If you want to give rookies a chance, just put them in the car.” His comments suggest a preference for more direct integration of rookies into existing races rather than a standalone event.

Russell, on the other hand, is enthusiastic about the plan, highlighting the challenges of FP1 sessions for rookie drivers and how a dedicated sprint race could provide a more suitable environment. “An opportunity for rookie drivers to do a full day of testing, then straight into a sprint race weekend. Yeah, I think it’s a good idea,” said Russell, reflecting on his own experiences as a rookie and the pressure that came with limited testing opportunities.

As the debate heats up, the FIA has been asked to assess the feasibility of the proposed changes An FIA spokesperson commented, “We are committed to exploring all possible avenues to suppor the development of young talent in Formula 1. Any modification to the calendar or sporting regulations will be made with the best interests of the sport and its future stars in mind.” The final decision is expected soon, as sporting directors prepare for the upcoming F1 Commission meeting.

With the sport’s top drivers divided on the matter, the FIA’s ruling will determine whether this rookie sprint race becomes a reality or remains just a controversial idea.
