Formula E star Lucas di Grassi made it clear that Lewis Hamilton was not the right choice for Scuderia Ferrari.
Scuderia Ferrari made headlines when it announced it had signed Lewis Hamilton for 2025. This decision generated mixed opinions in the paddock, as some disagreed with Maranello’s decision. Former Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi has joined this list.
Di Grassi said that if he were in Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur’s position, he would never have made the decision to sign Hamilton from Mercedes. The Brazilian made it clear that Lewis Hamilton is simply too expensive for a driver who, at 39, is no longer in his prime.
“I would never hire Hamilton for Ferrari if I was screwed. First of all, he is expensive, very expensive and I think he is no longer in his prime” – Lucas di Grassi told Motorsport Brazil
Lucas di Grassi is not the only one to hold this opinion. Former Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto had already made a similar comment against the Scuderia’s decision. However, Fred Vasseur has come forward and declared that he is not concerned by the comments regarding Lewis Hamilton’s arrival.
Lucas di Grassi replaces Lewis Hamilton for Ferrari
The third-season Formula E champion felt the Italian team would be better off signing someone else to replace Carlos Sainz. Lucas di Grassi claimed Maranello needed a driver who was at his best and could help Ferrari achieve their goal. The Brazilian appears to have no faith in Lewis Hamilton after the Briton’s disappointing final season at Mercedes.
“I would hire another driver who will reach the top of Ferrari at the right time.” – Lucas di Grassi noted
However, Ferrari remains confident in Hamilton. The seven-time world champion will bring a fresh perspective to Maranello. This could be immensely beneficial for the Italian team after finishing second in the constructors’ standings. However, it remains to be seen how Hamilton fares next year.
