FIA Confirms Verstappen’s Penalty with Additional Sanctions Following Abu Dhabi Incident

The 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit delivered an intense finale to the Formula 1 season, with McLaren clinching their first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years. Lando Norris led the charge with a commanding performance, securing both the race victory and the team’s place in history. However, the spotlight shifted to Max Verstappen after a controversial collision with Oscar Piastri on the opening lap.

The incident unfolded as Verstappen attempted an aggressive move to overtake Piastri at the first corner, resulting in both drivers spinning and falling to the back of the grid. The FIA promptly investigated the clash, ruling Verstappen responsible and issuing a 10-second time penalty, served during his pit stop.

The Red Bull champion expressed frustration with the stewards’ decision, continuing a pattern of disputes over aggressive racing tactics that have marred his season. Verstappen’s actions have been scrutinized for pushing the boundaries of fair competition, with this latest incident only intensifying the debate.

Following a thorough review of the incident post-race, the FIA imposed an additional sanction on Verstappen. Two penalty points were added to his Super Licence, bringing his total to eight within a 12-month period. This places the reigning champion in a precarious position, as accruing just four more points could result in a race ban, a penalty that Kevin Magnussen faced earlier in the season.

The punishment underscores the FIA’s commitment to maintaining safety and sportsmanship on the track. Verstappen’s aggressive maneuvers throughout the season have drawn mixed reactions, with some applauding his competitive edge and others calling for more restraint. The added penalty points serve as a clear warning that repeated violations will carry severe consequences.

As the longest Formula 1 season in history concludes, Verstappen’s actions highlight the mounting pressure at the pinnacle of motorsport. With McLaren’s resurgence and the increasing competitiveness of teams like Ferrari, the 2025 season promises heightened rivalry and further scrutiny of driving standards.

While McLaren celebrates their historic triumph and prepares for the challenges ahead, Verstappen and Red Bull face an uncertain offseason. The champion must reflect on his approach to racing as the sport moves toward a new chapter filled with fierce battles and evolving dynamics
