Evander Holyfield has been giving his thoughts on the sport’s top division after watching Oleksandr Usyk beat Tyson Fury to follow in his footsteps and become undisputed at both cruiserweight and heavyweight.
Holyfield’s storied career consisted of 57 fights, 44 wins and an impressive 11 title defenses. Amongst those bouts are two infamous meetings with Mike Tyson.
Despite beating Tyson twice, Holyfield holds him in high regard and believes he would dominate today’s heavyweight scene.
In a game of ‘winner stays on’ with Mail Sport, Holyfield picked Tyson to beat Fury without much hesitation.
In fact, he backed his former foe ‘Iron’ Mike over Fury, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. He stopped short at the undisputed Usyk – that’s a match-up ‘The Real Deal’ thought too close to call.
Holyfield’s predictions speak to the size debate in the heavyweight ranks, with some of the top dogs ‘giants’ compared to eras gone by. For his money, it doesn’t matter as much as many believe – Mike Tyson is 5 ft 10 in to ‘The Gypsy King’s 6 ft 7 in.
Usyk put paid to that theory by toppling the Brit this month. The Ukrainian is the same height as Muhammad Ali and weighs 10lbs lighter than Ali did in his final fight against Trevor Berbick.
The Ukrainian will rematch Fury on December 21 this year, but it’s so far unclear if it will be for all four heavyweight belts.
