Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez may have dismissed the call-out from Terence Crawford, but backing from Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh may convince him to change his mind.
‘Bud’ Crawford wants legacy bouts only since becoming undisputed champion at 147, evident from his determination to fight the elite Mexican up at 168.
That unprecedented three-weight jump, especially given he started his career off down at 135, has been largely ignored by Canelo, who believes he wouldn’t get credit for beating the smaller man, albeit one of the best fighters in the world.
Still, Crawford’s confidence has the boxing world talking and many even backing him to do the job should his wish be granted. Evander Holyfield can’t be considered in that camp.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, ‘The Real Deal’ looked visibly shocked at the idea of the fight before saying it would be hard for Crawford to best Canelo.
“It’s gonna be hard to beat Canelo. He’s real basic but a good fighter.”
The undisputed super-middleweight champion is set to make a decision on his next fight which could to be one of his mandatory challengers and take place this September. Despite rumours that he would vacate the IBF belt to avoid facing little-known contender William Scull, he has not yet made that call.
Crawford makes his debut at super-welterweight on August 3 against current WBA Champion Israil Madrimov. He may decide to stick around at 154 and look to unify the belts, but if the Canelo bout becomes a real possibility, expect him to jump.
