Barletta, Italy – The tennis world has been rocked by a shocking incident at the ATP Challenger tournament in Barletta. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has taken drastic measures after an incident of unsportsmanlike conduct sparked controversy on social media and among sports fans.

It all started during a match between Bulgarian Alexander Donski and Italian Simone Agostini. In a moment of extreme tension, Donski, clearly frustrated with the way the match was going, deliberately and forcefully hit the ball into his opponent’s face. This action immediately caused confusion among the spectators and brought the game to a halt.
Due to the severity of the situation, the ITF officially intervened just hours after the incident. In a statement, the federation announced the immediate dismissal of the match referee, accusing him of “unfairness” for not acting with the necessary force at the time.
Furthermore, the result of the match was declared null and void, removing any impact it might have had on the ATP rankings. As a disciplinary measure, Alexander Donski was banned from all professional competition for three months under the auspices of the ITF.
“This type of behaviour has no place in professional tennis. Player safety must always come first and sportsmanship is a value we firmly uphold,” an ITF spokesperson said.
The incident has sparked widespread debate within the tennis community, with some arguing that the punishment is insufficient, while others see it as a solid step towards maintaining discipline and respect on the court.
For her part, Simone Agostini was not seriously injured and later told the press that she hoped such an incident would not happen again: “Tennis is a respectful sport. I’m fine, but this will never happen again.”
The Barletta tournament will still go ahead, but the event will go down as one of the most controversial in recent Challenger history. The authorities have assured that disciplinary and security measures will be stepped up to prevent similar incidents from tarnishing the spirit of fair play.
