Daniel Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, was released by the New York Giants on November 22, following his own request. Jones had a challenging season in 2023, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 10 games, while also dealing with injuries and inconsistency. This underperformance contributed to his benching in favor of rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito, with the Giants sitting at a disappointing 2-8 record. Despite these setbacks, Jones’ release opened up the possibility for another team to bring him in.
One of the teams now linked to Jones is the Philadelphia Eagles, with Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice suggesting that the Eagles should replace current backup QB Kenny Pickett with Jones. While Jones is not expected to demand a hefty contract due to his release, it is anticipated that he would sign for the minimum salary, given that the Giants are still paying for his previous contract. This creates an opportunity for Philadelphia to potentially secure a quarterback with more experience and a greater skill set.
As the Eagles sit atop the NFC East with an 8-2 record heading into Week 12, having a backup quarterback with playoff experience could provide significant value. Jalen Hurts, the Eagles’ starter, is healthy, but adding a more experienced backup could be beneficial in case of injury or if Hurts needs rest. Jones is seen as a quarterback who, stylistically, is closer to Hurts due to his running ability, meaning the Eagles would not have to dramatically alter their playbook if Jones had to step in. Additionally, Jones is known as a good “culture guy,” and despite his past struggles, his ability to contribute both through the air and on the ground makes him a potentially strong addition to Philadelphia.
Jones’ best season came in 2022 when he led the Giants to their first playoff berth since 2016. He threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions, achieving a career-best passer rating of 92.5. He also rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat capability. His strong performance in 2022 earned him a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants. Unfortunately, his 2023 season was cut short after he tore his ACL in his right knee, limiting him to just six games.
Jones’ journey in the NFL has been a mix of potential and setbacks, with flashes of brilliance but also periods of inconsistency and injury. Over his six seasons with the Giants, he played in 70 games, amassing 14,582 passing yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. Despite his ups and downs, Jones’ leadership qualities and past successes still hold value.
Saquon Barkley, Jones’ former teammate with the Giants, expressed his sympathy after the news of Jones’ release broke. Barkley praised Jones’ character and work ethic, stating that Jones is “a guy who will come in and work,” and hoped he would find success in his next opportunity, just as Barkley has with the Eagles.
The question remains whether the Eagles will make a move for Jones and possibly initiate a reunion with Saquon Barkley in Philadelphia. With Jones’ availability being short-lived, the decision could come soon. Given Jones’ skill set and potential to contribute, he might be a valuable addition to the Eagles’ roster, providing depth and a viable backup option for the team’s Super Bowl aspirations
