Deontay Wilder’s Team Finally Responds To S.h.o.c.k World Title Offer After Long Silence

Deontay Wilder‘s career is on the ropes following back-to-back losses in Saudi Arabia.

In search of a long-awaited heavyweight clash against Anthony Joshua and with the ultimate goal of becoming a two-time champion, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ took on Joseph Parker in December of last year, promised the ‘AJ’ bout should he win. Uncharacteristically gun-shy, Wilder was completely out-boxed over twelve and lost a shutout on the cards.

He assured fans his killer instinct was back when he signed to fight Zhilei Zhang in June of this year but did admit that retirement may be considered should he lose. China’s ‘Big Bang’ got the stoppage in five rounds.

Wilder has remained silent on his fighting future since then, but there has been an offer for him to become a two-division champion should he fancy it.

WBC Bridgerweight Champion Lawrence Okolie welcomed the fight and the sanctioning body also gave it their backing. The relatively new division has a weight limit of 224lbs, one which Wilder has been comfortably fighting within for many years at heavyweight.

The 38-year-old’s manager, Shelly Finkel, has now responded to the offer – he told World Boxing News thanks but no thanks.

“Please thank Lawrence Okolie for the offer, but we have no interest in the WBC bridgerweight title.”

Okolie had held the belt since a first round knockout over Lukasz Rozanski in May having stepped up from Cruiserweight following losing his WBO World Title to Chris Billam-Smith. He has long teased a move to heavyweight but may look to defend this current status before doing so.

As perhaps the biggest puncher the sport has seen in some years, Wilder will have options should he opt for a ring return but if the Zhang fight wasn’t last chance saloon then the next fight certainly will be.
