Frank Warren has confirmed to talkSPORT that Tyson Fury intends to take the rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
In a fight for the ages, Usyk defeated Fury via split decision on May 18 to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era. After a bright start from the Ukrainian, Fury took over in the middle rounds before a miraculous recovery down the home stretch saw Usyk get his hand raised on points. In a dramatic turn of events, ‘The Cat’ dropped and nearly stopped Fury in the ninth round of what will surely go down in history as one of the greatest heavyweight showdowns of all time.
The pair are now contractually obliged to run it back on October 12/13, providing Fury activates the two-way rematch clause in their contract. Fury called for a rematch in the immediate aftermath of their fight, although he was a little more ambiguous in his post-fight press conference, saying: “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
However, when Fury’s promoter, Warren, joined talkSPORT on Tuesday afternoon, he made it clear that his client would be activating the rematch clause over the coming days. “He’s back here, he’s recuperating, and his mood is that he wants the rematch and that’s already signed for so it will happen,” said Warren.
He then confirmed that the fight will take place in October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – the location of their inaugural encounter. Usyk’s promoter, Alexander Krassyuk, also recently insisted that they will honor the two-fight agreement. “We are men of our words,” he told Boxing King Media. “It’s not about paperwork – if we shake hands and promise something, we do it. I see no reason for the rematch not to take place.”
Meanwhile, Usyk confirmed at his post-fight press conference that he is ‘ready for the rematch’. Fury will relish the opportunity to get one back over Usyk after insisting he was unlucky to have dropped the decision. “I believe I won that fight. I think he won a few of those rounds but I won the majority of them,” Fury said. “Make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion.”
The rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is set to be another epic encounter, as both fighters look to solidify their legacy in the boxing world.
