Former Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison insists that despite Daniel Dubois’ recent career resurgence, he still has much to learn to stand a chance against Anthony Joshua.
Dubois, nicknamed ‘Triple D’, has been on a dramatic upswing in the last six months. After being criticized for “quitting” against Joe Joyce and Oleksandr Usyk, Dubois has redeemed himself with gutsy wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic. These victories have improved his public perception and positioned him for a potential world title opportunity.
Dubois’ promoter, Frank Warren, recently confirmed that negotiations are underway for Dubois to face fellow countryman Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in September. This prospective fight comes after Dubois’ impressive performance against Hrgovic, which has bolstered his standing in the heavyweight division.
However, Harrison, a seasoned boxing veteran, believes Dubois still needs to make significant technical improvements. “There’s a few things he’s going to have to clean up to go through Joshua. I’m very technical,” Harrison told Betting Sites. “Defensively his hands have got to come up just a little bit more. He wants to roll his shoulders. He needs to keep his hands higher.”
Harrison also emphasized the importance of defensive adjustments for Dubois, noting, “If AJ throws quick punches, he’s going to get caught. His shoulders want to be a bit looser and just come up a little so that he can ride the shots a little better.”
Dubois’ recent improvements have been largely attributed to his collaboration with head trainer Don Charles. Yet, Harrison believes he can elevate Dubois’ game even further. “Dubois needs a finisher. That’s the kind of trainer I am, I can see straight away what somebody is doing wrong,” Harrison added. “I know if I had him in the gym, the stuff I’d have him doing would clean him up. I can see what he needs just to finish him off and it would help him against somebody like Joshua.”
As Dubois prepares for what could be the biggest fight of his career, the boxing community watches with anticipation. Whether he can make the necessary adjustments to compete at the highest level remains to be seen, but with potential guidance from experienced figures like Harrison, Dubois may yet achieve greatness in the heavyweight division.
