Dana White Confirms No Interim Title in Islam Makhachev’s Absence: “We Have Plans”
UFC President Dana White has confirmed that there will be no interim lightweight title created despite the injury of current champion Islam Makhachev. The UFC is opting to wait for Makhachev’s return, even as the division’s top contenders await their next opportunity.
Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, last competed in June at UFC 302, where he defended his title against Dustin Poirier. Despite facing tough competition, Makhachev secured a fifth-round submission victory, maintaining his status as one of the most dominant fighters in the division.
Following his successful title defense, Makhachev was linked to a highly anticipated rematch with Arman Tsarukyan. The two first fought in April 2019, with Makhachev earning a decision victory. The rematch was targeted for October in Abu Dhabi, but plans were derailed due to Makhachev’s injury, leading to the cancellation of the bout.
With Makhachev sidelined, there were rumors that the UFC might create an interim title, possibly involving Tsarukyan. However, Dana White has dismissed these speculations, confirming that there will be no interim belt. Instead, the UFC will wait for Makhachev’s recovery and plan his return.
In a recent interview, White explained his decision, stating, “No [I’m not considering an interim title], Islam’s fought so many times and is always willing to jump up and take a fight. So, no. There won’t be an interim title. When he’s ready to go, we’ll go [and book him].”
White also hinted that plans are already in place for Makhachev’s next fight, although specific details are still being finalized. “We have plans, we’re looking at it right now on when he would fight. Yes, Tsarukyan is [still] the number one contender. I don’t know [when they’ll fight], we’re working on it,” he added.
While fans eagerly await Makhachev’s return, the UFC lightweight division remains one of the most competitive in the sport. Contenders like Arman Tsarukyan, Kamaru Usman, and others are jockeying for position, hoping for a shot at the title when Makhachev is ready to defend his belt once again.
For now, the UFC’s decision to hold off on an interim title suggests a strong commitment to its champion. As Makhachev works on his recovery, the spotlight will remain on the division’s rising stars, who continue to make their case for a title opportunity.
Dana White’s confirmation that there will be no interim lightweight title despite Islam Makhachev’s injury reflects the UFC’s confidence in their champion’s eventual return. With plans already in motion for Makhachev’s next fight, fans can expect more updates as the year progresses.
