Concerns Rise as 57-Year-Old Mike Tyson Steps Back into the Ring Against Jake Paul

Mike Tyson, once heralded as “the baddest man on the planet” during his reign as the heavyweight boxing champion, is stirring up significant concern among boxing enthusiasts and his peers as he plans a comeback to the ring at age 57. Known more recently for his roles in “The Hangover” films and the “Mike Tyson Mysteries” TV series over the past two decades, Tyson’s decision to fight YouTube star Jake Paul on July 20 is not merely an exhibition; it’s a professionally commissioned bout by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.

Jake Paul, 27, holds a record of 9-1 with six knockouts. His opponents have largely been a mix of celebrities and fighters not considered top-tier, with his only loss coming from a split decision against Tommy Fury, the brother of current heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Despite this, the upcoming fight with Tyson has been officially sanctioned as a professional match, raising eyebrows and concerns.

### Voices of Concern

Deontay Wilder, former heavyweight champion, has openly criticized the decision to allow Tyson to compete professionally after being inactive in boxing for nearly 20 years. “I don’t want the last thing I remember of him is him getting knocked out by a YouTuber,” Wilder expressed concerningly. He emphasized the dangers inherent in boxing, especially for someone of Tyson’s age, pointing out that serious injuries, including comas, have occurred in the sport due to hits taken in the ring.

Wilder is troubled by the licensing decision, suggesting that it was made based on Tyson’s celebrity rather than his current ability to safely compete. “It’s bad the commission has licensed Mike Tyson…that’s how people get hurt – God forbid he gets hurt,” he said to Sportsbook Review.

### Preparations and Perspectives

Despite the concerns, Tyson has been active on social media, posting workout videos that showcase his enduring power and skill, which will be necessary against a younger and powerful puncher like Paul. However, Wilder remains skeptical, “His power may not have left completely, but you still need to set it up, your stamina needs to be a certain way, or it’s going to look like a clown show.”

Jake Paul, for his part, has shown a mix of respect and competitive fire ahead of the fight. “I love the guy, but as soon as it turned into a pro fight, one of us has to die,” said Paul, reflecting the high stakes and intensity expected in the ring.

### A Legacy in Question

The bout revives Tyson’s famous adage, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth,” putting both fighters’ strategies and resilience to the test. As the boxing community watches closely, the debate continues on whether this match will tarnish or glorify Tyson’s legendary status in the sport. The spectacle is set, but at what cost and to whose legacy, remains to be seen.
