Colin Cowherd drops bonkers Joe Milton claim amid Drake Maye’s Patriots training camp woes.
The New England Patriots are deep into their training camp QB battle, with veteran Jacoby Brissett currently the frontrunner to start in Week 1. However, he faces stiff competition from first-round pick Drake Maye and rookie QB Joe Milton III. Recently, Colin Cowherd made a bold prediction about who he believes will win the job.
In a recent episode of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” the sports commentator shared his thoughts on the Patriots’ quarterback situation. Cowherd argued that New England’s defensive culture makes it a tough landing spot for any rookie QB. He suggested that Joe Milton III might have an edge over Drake Maye due to his superior athleticism and playmaking ability. Cowherd concluded with, “Don’t be surprised if Joe Milton wins the job.”
This prediction might seem far-fetched given the limited training camp evidence. However, Cowherd’s remarks aren’t entirely without basis. Earlier this week, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reported that Milton III has outperformed Maye in the first six training camp sessions.
“I wrote after last Thursday’s practice that Milton is the ‘wow’ quarterback at camp—the guy with the best physique, best athleticism, and biggest arm,” Volin said. “Now I’ll go a step further: Milton has outplayed Maye in the first six practices of camp. You can’t tell which player was the third overall pick (Maye) and which was a sixth-rounder (Milton).”
Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who began training camp as the presumed Week 1 starter, remains a key figure in this competition. Brissett recently shared his confident approach to the QB battle with Kay Adams on “Up & Adams.”
“There are two things that can be true: I might be perfect for that situation, but I’m also perfect to start,” Brissett said. “Don’t take that away from me. I fully expect to be the starter as long as I’m here. Whatever happens outside of that, that’s not my business. That doesn’t mean I’m down on myself because of someone else. It just means, like, I’m not too big for a situation where I can go out there and perform but also go out there and help my teammates and help lead this team.”
While Brissett’s experience gives him an edge, Maye and Milton III are not to be underestimated. Maye, the first-round pick, and Milton III, the standout athlete, both bring unique skills and potential to the table. Their performances in training camp will be crucial in determining whether they can dethrone Brissett.
The Patriots’ QB battle is one of the most intriguing storylines of the preseason. Jacoby Brissett’s experience and confidence make him the favorite, but the emergence of Joe Milton III and the potential of Drake Maye add layers of excitement to this competition. As training camp progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see who ultimately wins the starting job.
