At WWE Backlash France, Cody Rhodes beat AJ Styles to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship. After Nick Aldis said that Styles would have to earn a rematch, Styles teased his retirement on the May 31 episode of WWE SmackDown, as he noted that he did not have enough time at this stage in his career. Styles then blindsided Rhodes and attacked him, as he hit Rhodes with a Styles Clash off the steel steps.
Security guards separated Rhodes and Styles on the June 7 episode of WWE SmackDown. Rhodes then came to the ring and called Styles out, eager for a fight. Styles came out and told Rhodes to give him what he wanted, and that was a title match at WWE Clash at the Castle. Rhodes agreed to the bout and said he would make Styles say, “I quit.”
WWE then confirmed that Rhodes would defend the title against Styles in an “I Quit” match at the premium live event on June 15.
