Coco Gauff’s Olympic debut is set to be historic. On Wednesday, the 20-year-old tennis sensation was named Team USA’s female flag bearer for Friday’s Opening Ceremony in Paris. This makes Gauff the first American tennis player and the youngest athlete to receive this prestigious honor.

Gauff will lead nearly 600 U.S. athletes, along with staff and dignitaries, in the traditional parade of nations. This year’s ceremony will be unique, as athletes will float down Paris’ Seine River before marching into the Jardins du Trocadéro. Gauff will be joined by basketball legend LeBron James, who was selected as the U.S. male flag bearer.

Selected by a vote from the Team USA Athletes’ Commission, Gauff was nominated by her fellow first-time Olympian, Chris Eubanks, who referred to her as his “little sister.” Gauff expressed her surprise and pride in a statement: “I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony. I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is.”

Eubanks praised Gauff, saying, “I’m incredibly proud of Coco—I know how great she is as a tennis player, but more importantly, how great she is as a person. I don’t think there is anyone more deserving of this honor and I’m excited to see her carry the flag as she leads our U.S. delegation in the opening ceremony.”

Other notable tennis players who have had the honor of being flag bearers include Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, and Caroline Wozniacki.
In addition to Gauff’s selection, Chile’s Nicolas Jarry was named the male flag bearer for his country, and Danka Kovinic will carry the flag for Montenegro. Kovinic, once ranked as high as No. 46 in the world, was awarded a “universality place” to represent her country in her second Olympic Games, while Jarry, ranked No. 24, is making his Olympic debut in Paris.
