Coach Malik Scott ‘discouraged’ by Deontay Wilder’s performance against Zhang, “Lost miserably”

The fallout from Deontay Wilder’s second back-to-back loss continues.

American knockout artist Wilder has fallen a long way in recent times. At one point, he was a long-ruling WBC champion, feared by many and stopping just about everyone he faced in the ring. A bruising trilogy with Tyson Fury put paid to that as he came out with one draw, two losses and no belt.

He fought just once in the two years after that, stopping Robbert Helenius in the first round, before coming up against Joseph Parker in December of last year.

A tentative performance saw him come away with a points loss after 12 rounds. Then he stepped into the ring with Zhilei Zhang back in June on the Matchroom versus Queensberry card and was viciously stopped in five rounds.

Speaking to The Second Wind Sports Media, trainer Malik Scott, who has come in for criticism since the defeat, explained what happened.

“The shot that he got hit with, I think what was discouraging more to me than anything as a teacher is that everything we trained it literally went to shit.

It sometimes happens in boxing. I truly believe that Devin Haney and Bill did everything they could in turning camp to avoid the left hook [against Ryan Garcia] but what was the first shot he went out there and got hit with? The left hook. Boxing be boxing and life be life sometimes. That sh*t s unexplainable.”

He then addresses accusations that it’s his methods which have taken something away from Wilder’s game.

“Imagine seeing a killer your whole career then suddenly you’re not seeing that killer anymore. Then a story can be made up that he ain’t a killer no more cause of Malik Scott. I can’t take that instinct away, only Father Time can take that away. That instinct is in you or not.”

Many think Wilder could now retire, but fellow heavyweight Jarrell Miller is keen for him to fight on.
