A fight with four-belt super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is a golden ticket in boxing.
Mexico’s Alvarez is one of the biggest draws in the sport. His pay-per-view numbers tower over anyone else’s and he has signed some of the richest fight contracts backed by mega sponsors.
Opponents facing him of course often get much higher purses than they would elsewhere, which is why so many pursue him.
However, once in the ring, he is a fearsome proposition who has lost just twice in more than 60 fights – the first many years ago to Floyd Mayweather, and more recently it was when stepping up to light-heavyweight to take on the highly rated Dmitry Bivol.
Last time out Canelo beat fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia with another impressive performance against a hungry young challenger. As a result, he retained all four of the 168 titles and his undisputed status and is now continually being linked with a super fight with Terrence Crawford.
Another highly rated talent, Australian Jai Opetaia, has now revealed to Fight Hub TV that he has been asked if he would take a fight with Canelo. He didn’t hesitate to say yes.
“The Sheik actually asked me. Last week he rang me and said would you fight Canelo. I feel like it’s crazy. I feel like if Canelo comes up to my division, I feel like he is too small, it would be a bad move for him. But that’s another fight, how can you say no to that?”
Opetaia recently had a tough rematch with Mairis Briedis on the undercard of the Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usy undisputed fight on May 18. He came out victorious after surviving a late rally by Briedis to take his record to 25-0, 19 KOs and regain the IBF cruiserweight world title that he had previously been forced to vacate.
