The boxer from Guadalajara has rejected the idea of an exhibition match with “The Money.” Even a multi-million-dollar purse can’t entice Saul “Canelo” Alvarez back into the ring to face Floyd Mayweather Jr., who handed him his first professional defeat nearly a decade ago.
During the ‘No Golf No Life’ tournament, Canelo dismissed the idea of facing Mayweather again and reiterated his lack of interest. “I don’t know what they call an exhibition fight, but I don’t even know if I would leave Mexico,” he said in an interview.
Canelo firmly declined the match with the retired American boxer: “But I am not interested in an exhibition fight with Mayweather, the truth is I am not,” he concluded.
We have to go back to September 2013 when the fight dubbed ‘The One’ took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas between Mayweather and Alvarez.
In a bout that was a marketing and box office magnet, the veteran “Money” defended his title against a 23-year-old Mexican fighter. Mayweather outclassed Canelo with his ring intelligence, securing a majority decision victory and handing Canelo his first defeat in 43 professional fights. Despite the financial success of the fight, a rematch was never agreed upon.
Mayweather last fought professionally on August 26, 2017, when he defeated MMA fighter Conor McGregor, ending his career with a perfect 50-0 record.
Following his retirement from professional boxing, Mayweather turned to exhibition matches, facing Tenshin Nasukawa on December 31, 2018, and Logan Paul on June 6, 2021.
Now, “Money” has another exhibition fight scheduled, set to take place at Arena Ciudad de Mexico on August 24. Rumors suggest his opponent could be Victor Ortiz.
