It seems that the super classic fight that fans have been waiting for in the past 2 years between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will take place thanks to the support of Arab billionaires.
Accordingly, according to the latest information recorded, Saudi Arabia’s prince, who is also the country’s Minister of Entertainment, Mr. Turki Alalshikh has made an announcement about reaching a preliminary agreement to organize a super classic match between “The Face of Boxing” Canelo Alvarez and the world’s first two-weight absolute champion, Terence Crawford.
Currently, both Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are boxers who hold all the championship belts in their weight class. Canelo is currently the absolute champion of the Super Middleweight division, owning all the prestigious belts: WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring.
Although not as famous as Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford also holds the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring titles in the Welterweight (Welterweight) division. Before switching classes, he was also an absolute champion, holding the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring titles in the Light Welterweight division.
The idea of a clash in the ring between the two top boxers of today has been mentioned for a long time. However, because they compete in different weight classes, up to 3 classes apart, the feasibility of the match is not high. It is unclear what weight class the two boxers will agree to compete in. It will most likely be a Catchweight match, when both will agree on an achievable middle weight. However, Canelo is the dominant person as he has been competing in a lower weight class for quite a long time.
According to His Highness Turki Alalshikh, the match will take place in late 2024 or early 2025. The event will be held in the US, not Saudi Arabia like many tournaments he has organized before. This is also a difference that the Arab princes proposed.
“We are considering organizing this match in the United States, because everyone wants the event to take place in the most spectacular way,” said Prince Turki Alalshikh. “This fight could also help Canelo increase total PPV revenue at his fights to $1 billion.”
