Canelo Alvarez has responded for the first time about why he doesn’t want to fight Benavidez.

Although David Benavidez is preparing to battle Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Las Vegas on June 15, the fight he truly desires is against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. However, it appears unlikely that this showdown will happen anytime soon, with Alvarez stating that he would need $200 million to step into the ring with ‘The Red Flag’.

This demand has led Benavidez and others to claim that Canelo is avoiding the fight out of fear of losing. However, Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, has offered a different perspective. In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Ellerbe dismissed the notion that Canelo is scared of Benavidez. “One thing is for sure, I am not buying that bulls**t that Canelo is scared of him. I am not buying that, it’s just a money thing!” he stated.

Ellerbe went on to commend Canelo for his business acumen, noting his efforts to connect with American fans and his willingness to communicate in English. “He is a great businessman… he is a great role model,” Ellerbe said, adding, “He has done everything you can ask of a fighter, he has fought everybody.”After defeating Jaime Munguia in April, Canelo addressed the possibility of a fight with Benavidez. At the post-fight press conference, he emphasized that money was the primary factor. “If the money’s right… I can fight [Benavidez] right now. I don’t give a s**t. It’s only a matter of money at this point. Everybody is asking for everything.”

Canelo also highlighted the extensive list of formidable opponents he has faced over the years, countering suggestions that he avoids tough fights. “I can do whatever I want,” he asserted. While Benavidez is set to face Gvozdyk, a former sparring partner of Canelo who is managed by Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso, the underlying narrative remains centered on the potential Canelo-Benavidez clash. This fight, which would undoubtedly be a major draw, is entangled in financial considerations and strategic decisions within the boxing world.

For now, fans will have to wait and see if the stars align for this highly anticipated match-up. Until then, both fighters continue to build their legacies in the ring, with Canelo remaining a central figure in the sport due to his impressive record and business savvy.
