Canelo Alvarez says he would only contemplate a fight with internet sensation Jake Paul once he is “done with boxing.” This comes after Paul, known as the “Problem Kid,” has repeatedly expressed his desire to face the Mexican.
Paul’s recent fight with Mike Tyson, which attracted a global audience of 108 million and ranks as the 10th most-watched sporting event in history, was the most notable to date.
The Netflix-sponsored event sparked controversy, particularly due to the 30-year age difference between the fighters, and Paul emerged victorious by unanimous decision.
Despite this, Canelo seems uninterested at the moment, indicating on The Full Send Podcast that he could view such a fight as the closing curtain on his illustrious career in the ring.
Canelo currently holds several super middleweight titles and said: “When I’m done with boxing [at the highest level], why not? Yeah, maybe.
“I think it’s good because it attracts fans who don’t normally watch boxing. They know Jake Paul, but they don’t know anything about boxing. Maybe [he’ll take the fight with Paul].”
As he looks ahead to his next fight, Paul hasn’t been shy about his ambition to face Canelo.
He recently said on the Timbo Sugar Show: “Me against Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight world championship is the biggest fight, possibly even bigger than me against Tyson.
“It makes a lot of sense. Canelo is about to retire. He’s going to want to cash in and I want to show the world that all the nonsense I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is true and that I’m going to have the biggest upset in boxing history.
“The biggest criticism of everyone is fighting a professional, fighting someone your age. So when I say that Canelo is the right person, then everyone hates me.”
