BREAKING NEWS🛑Max Verstappen ‘really worked up’ as F1 steward lifts lid on FIA swearing punishment

Max Verstappen Fined by FIA for Swearing at Singapore GP, Sparking Controversy

F1 World Champion Max Verstappen was penalized by the FIA after swearing during a press conference ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. The reigning champion was ordered to complete “work of public interest” as a consequence of his language, a move made in light of FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s recent call for stricter behavior standards, noting that “we have to differentiate between our sport and rap music.”

The incident unfolded after Verstappen expressed frustration during a press conference, resulting in his sanction. According to F1 steward Johnny Herbert, Verstappen was visibly upset during a meeting with the stewards, where they discussed the appropriateness of his language in a global setting. Herbert defended the decision to sanction Verstappen, explaining that while drivers have strong personalities, press conferences are not the place for foul language. He added that the punishment, rather than a fine, was intended to encourage socially responsible behavior.

Verstappen’s reaction to the penalty was one of defiance. He was noticeably less engaged during press conferences for the rest of the weekend and even staged an impromptu media gathering after qualifying, bypassing the official FIA session. His protest received support from fellow drivers, including seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who advised Verstappen not to serve his punishment. McLaren’s Lando Norris also voiced his disagreement, calling the decision “unfair.”

The controversy extended beyond F1, with rally driver Sébastien Ogier taking a similar stand at Rally Chile, citing Verstappen’s protest after facing his own penalties from the FIA. Ogier claimed that drivers were being silenced, drawing parallels with Verstappen’s situation.

Herbert reflected on Verstappen’s rebellious nature, acknowledging it as part of what makes him unique, but emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism in front of younger audiences who look up to the drivers. Herbert hopes such incidents will be avoided in future races, particularly as the 2024 F1 season continues at the upcoming United States Grand Prix.

In a meeting with drivers, Herbert revealed that at least one F1 star spoke against the use of foul language, agreeing that drivers should be mindful of their influence on younger fans. Herbert concluded that while Verstappen’s behavior showed his strong character, drivers must collaborate with the FIA to set an example for the sport’s global audience.
