Fernando Alonso Urges F1 Drivers to “Behave Properly” After Max Verstappen’s Swearing Incident with FIA

Fernando Alonso has emphasized the importance of Formula 1 drivers conducting themselves professionally in the public eye following Max Verstappen’s recent clash with the FIA over inappropriate language. Verstappen, who was penalized for swearing during a press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix, was ordered to perform “public interest work” as part of his punishment.

The incident came after FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem called for stricter regulations on drivers’ language, insisting that F1 must “differentiate between our sport and rap music.” Verstappen’s defiance in response to the punishment saw him limiting his participation in press conferences for the rest of the weekend, even holding his own impromptu media gathering outside the official FIA session.

Alonso, a two-time World Champion, weighed in on the situation during an appearance at a sponsor event in India. He stressed the responsibility drivers have as role models, especially considering the global fanbase that looks up to them. Alonso explained, “When you are a driver, you have to behave properly. Fans give you love and motivation, but also expect you to act responsibly.” He added that it’s essential for drivers to control their emotions and remain politically correct, even when faced with challenging situations.

This is not the first time Verstappen’s behavior has drawn attention. Earlier in the F1 2024 season, Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen’s 2021 title rival, urged the Red Bull driver to “act like a World Champion” after Verstappen lost his temper during a difficult race in Hungary. Verstappen was heard criticizing his team over the radio and later made an expletive-laden comment to his critics in the post-race media session.

Hamilton echoed Alonso’s sentiments, reminding drivers of the need to be team players and set a good example. He noted, “You have to act like a World Champion,” underlining the pressure and responsibility that comes with being at the top of the sport.

The debate over drivers’ conduct and whether elite athletes should be held to a higher standard as role models continues to divide opinions. However, both Alonso and Hamilton’s remarks suggest that professionalism and respect in front of the media are essential aspects of being a top F1 driver.

As the F1 season moves forward, Verstappen’s behavior, and that of other drivers, will likely remain under scrutiny, with many calling for a balance between authenticity and the responsibilities that come with global fame.
