Mercedes admite este ENORME ERROR que arruinó el GP de EE. UU. de Lewis Hamilton.

In a surprising turn of events, the 2024 U.S. Grand Prix witnessed an unexpected disappointment for Lewis Hamilton and his fans. The seven-time world champion’s stellar performance at the Circuit of the Americas was overshadowed by a significant mistake from his own team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas, which ultimately cost him the chance to fight for victory.

Lewis Hamilton had high hopes going into the U.S. Grand Prix, having shown remarkable pace during the weekend. Starting from the second row, he kept his championship hopes alive, positioning himself to challenge the likes of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Hamilton’s racecraft was sharp from the beginning, with strong lap times and brilliant tire management that hinted at a potential podium finish—or perhaps, even a win.

However, this optimistic outlook began to crumble mid-race when Mercedes committed a crucial strategic error that compromised Hamilton’s chances. The mistake, which involved tire selection and pit stop timing, quickly undid all the hard work put in by both the driver and the team.

The pivotal error occurred during the first pit stop window. With the race track evolving and grip levels changing, teams needed to react quickly to adjust their strategies. Mercedes, however, misjudged the tire degradation and opted for the wrong tire compound during Hamilton’s pit stop. This left the British driver struggling for pace on a set of tires that neither performed optimally nor suited the track conditions.

Team principal Toto Wolff did not shy away from responsibility. In a post-race interview, Wolff admitted: _“We got it wrong today. We were too conservative with our strategy and missed the window to make the right call. It’s a tough pill to swallow because Lewis was driving brilliantly.”_

While tire strategy plays a crucial role in Formula 1, Mercedes’ miscalculation proved disastrous. The tires fitted on Hamilton’s car during the second stint lacked the grip necessary to maintain a competitive pace. This gave Verstappen and other rivals the opportunity to pull away, leaving Hamilton vulnerable to attacks from drivers behind, including Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Not only did the wrong tire compound affect Hamilton’s speed, but Mercedes also waited too long to make a corrective second pit stop. In high-level racing, such delays can be the difference between victory and defeat. By the time the second pit stop came, Hamilton had lost too much ground, making it impossible to recover within the race’s final laps.

_“It’s frustrating,”_ Hamilton commented after the race. _“We had the pace to fight for the win, but the strategy just didn’t come together today. I gave it everything out there, but sometimes things just don’t go your way.”_

The U.S. Grand Prix result dealt a significant blow to Hamilton’s campaign in the 2024 Formula 1 season. With Verstappen extending his points lead and only a handful of races remaining, Hamilton’s chances of securing an eighth world title have become more challenging. Mercedes, too, finds itself in a difficult spot, as strategic errors like these raise questions about whether the team can recapture the consistency it once had during its dominant years.

This isn’t the first time Mercedes has struggled with strategy in 2024. Similar mistakes occurred earlier in the season, indicating that the team has yet to find a rhythm in the new era of competition. Red Bull, on the other hand, has been nearly flawless, capitalizing on every opportunity to keep their drivers ahead.

Mercedes’ admission of their mistake, while refreshing in a sport where teams often deflect blame, may not be enough to satisfy Hamilton’s fans. Many supporters expressed their disappointment on social media, criticizing the team for repeatedly failing to deliver under pressure. However, there is still optimism within the camp.

Wolff promised a thorough review of the race strategy, stating: _“We’ll take a close look at what went wrong and ensure we don’t make the same mistakes again. We owe it to Lewis and the team to come back stronger.”_

The next race will be a crucial test for Mercedes. With only a few rounds left in the season, the pressure is mounting for the team to correct its strategic flaws and give Hamilton the tools he needs to fight for wins. Whether Mercedes can regain its former glory and turn the tide remains to be seen.

The U.S. Grand Prix served as a stark reminder that even the most successful teams in Formula 1 are not immune to mistakes. For Mercedes, the challenge now lies in learning from this setback and regaining their competitive edge. As for Lewis Hamilton, the dream of an eighth world title is still alive—but with the margin for error narrowing, every decision from here on out will be critical.

Hamilton’s fans will be hoping that the events at the Circuit of the Americas were just a blip on the radar, and that both driver and team can rise to the occasion in the remaining races. As Formula 1 has shown time and again, the road to victory is never smooth—and it’s in moments of adversity that champions are truly defined.
