Liverpool’s Robbie Davies Jr. is ready to punch his way back into world title contention after a grueling layoff due to a freakish injury. The 34-year-old junior welterweight steps back into the ring on Wednesday, May 8th, facing former IBF champion Sergey Lipinets at the ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida (streamed live on the ProBox TV App).
Davies Jr. (23-4, 15 KOs) understands the fight’s significance. It’s a career-defining moment. After an eleven-year professional career marked by a comeback with three consecutive wins, his momentum was halted by a devastating ankle injury in a March 2023 fight against Darragh Foley. The injury dashed his hopes for an immediate world title shot.
“It was a freak accident,” Davies stated. “Something you don’t see much anymore in boxing.”
Returning after more than a year out, Davies finds himself in a pivotal 50-50 matchup. “This is the kind of fight I need to re-establish myself in the sport,” Davies explained. “I want everyone to know I’m still a top contender in this division.”
Lipinets (17-3-1, 13 KOs), 35, also enters the ring with something to prove, coming off a loss to Michel Rivera. Both fighters, now in their thirties, face a potentially career-defining night. A loss could be a hurdle too high to overcome.
Davies believes victory will reignite his career. “It’s what I need to get back on track,” he admitted. “Hopefully, a win will put me back in the mix for those big fights.”
Armed with a new weapon – former world champion Anthony Crolla as his trainer – Davies Jr. seeks to end his hiatus in style and leverage the win into a marquee fight.
