FIA Issues Penalty Verdict After Las Vegas Grand Prix Incident
The FIA has released its decision regarding Fernando Alonso’s pit lane infringement during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend. The incident, which occurred during Free Practice 3 (FP3), saw the Aston Martin driver summoned to the stewards for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by 1.3 km/h.
The governing body confirmed that Alonso’s actions violated Article 34.7 of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, which strictly enforces speed limits within the pit lane for safety reasons. However, the FIA opted for a lenient approach, imposing a €200 fine on Aston Martin instead of issuing a grid penalty or a reprimand to Alonso.
This decision marks a relatively minor consequence for Aston Martin, as they continue to face challenges in the latter stages of the 2024 season. Alonso’s performance during qualifying was already underwhelming, with the team struggling to make significant strides against their midfield rivals.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix, set against a backdrop of glitz and glamour, provided dramatic moments both at the front and the back of the grid. Mercedes emerged as the team to watch, with George Russell stunning the field to secure pole position, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton endured a disappointing Q3, starting from P10. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and McLaren also remained competitive, adding to the intense battle for supremacy.
Aston Martin, however, found themselves in dire straits. Lance Stroll suffered engine issues in FP3, which caused a red flag and hampered the team’s preparations. Despite frantic efforts to repair Stroll’s car, he was unable to progress beyond Q1, finishing the session in last place.
The penalty verdict for Alonso adds to the team’s list of woes but does little to overshadow the broader struggles Aston Martin has faced this season. With only a handful of races remaining in the 2024 calendar, the team will need to regroup and address their performance deficits to remain competitive in the midfield battle.
As the action continues in Las Vegas, fans and teams alike will turn their attention to the high-stakes race, where chaos and unpredictability could reshape the narrative of the weekend. For now, Alonso and Aston Martin can breathe a sigh of relief, avoiding severe repercussions from the FIA’s investigation.
