BREAKING NEWS : Aryna Sabalenka has caused a stir on social media by claiming that Emma Raducunu’s historic tennis victories were due to luck and the bias of the ATP and umpires. Carlos Alcaraz immediately responded with just nine words, leaving the world number one speechless.

A new storm has rocked the tennis world, and this time it’s not a party or an injury, but an unexpected exchange of statements that has set social media ablaze. The protagonist: Aryna Sabalenka, the current number one in the women’s world rankings. The other side of the coin: Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, and Carlos Alcaraz, the young Spanish phenomenon who didn’t hesitate to come to the British player’s defense with a phrase that’s already trending worldwide.

It all started with an Instagram story Sabalenka posted early Monday morning, hours after her shock Wimbledon quarterfinal exit. Visibly upset, the Belarusian wrote:

Winning a Grand Slam with so little experience isn’t a feat, it’s luck. And if you also have the ATP and the umpires on your side, it’s even easier. Let’s not kid ourselves: Raducanu hasn’t proven anything.

The reaction was immediate. Although the post was deleted minutes later, screenshots began circulating on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, generating a wave of comments both for and against the player. Many criticized his lack of sportsmanship, while others pointed out that he was simply expressing an opinion.

But the moment that truly marked a before and after was the unexpected intervention of Carlos Alcaraz.

The young Murcian, who has been known for his elegance both on and off the court, did not remain silent in the face of what he considered an unfair and gratuitous attack. Through his official X account (formerly Twitter), Alcaraz wrote just nine words, without directly mentioning Sabalenka, but making his position clear:

Luck doesn’t win tournaments. Talent does.

The response was brief, direct, and devastating. In less than an hour, the tweet surpassed 100,000 likes and was shared by tennis figures, sports journalists, and fans around the world. Comments included messages such as:  “Class and truth in a single sentence  ,   ” “Alcaraz, MVP of tennis and common sense,”  and  “This is how he defends a teammate without insults.”

Emma Raducanu, for her part, didn’t respond directly to Sabalenka. But hours later, she posted a photo from her training session with the caption:
“Let them talk.
I’m still working.”

The tension was evident in the Wimbledon arena. According to sources close to the tournament, Sabalenka refused to comment on the matter during her final press conference and left the room visibly upset when asked about Alcaraz’s comment.

Meanwhile, players such as Ons Jabeur, Casper Ruud, and Coco Gauff have liked the Spaniard’s message, which many interpreted as a show of tacit support for Raducanu.

The ATP and WTA have yet to issue official statements regarding the incident, but specialized media are already reporting a possible “disciplinary action” against Sabalenka by the WTA, which believes her statements could be considered unsportsmanlike and damaging to the image of the tour.

Beyond the sanctions, the truth is that this episode has made it clear that respect among colleagues remains an insurmountable limit. While Sabalenka remains at the center of controversy, Alcaraz has once again demonstrated why she is considered not only a promising tennis player, but also an example of maturity and elegance in a sport where pressure and competitiveness often harm the worst—or the best—athletes.

And for millions of fans who still remember the fairytale that was Raducanu’s US Open title, it’s clear that what the 18-year-old won wasn’t luck: it was pure history.

Thus, in just nine words, Carlos Alcaraz put an end to a controversy… and returned to tennis a bit of that nobility that sometimes seems forgotten.
