Kelly Piquet Criticizes FIA for Delayed Red Flag in Verstappen’s Disappointing Brazilian GP Qualifying

Kelly Piquet publicly criticized the FIA for its handling of her partner Max Verstappen’s qualifying session at the Brazilian Grand Prix, particularly the delay in issuing a red flag following a crash. The Brazilian Grand Prix weekend proved challenging for Verstappen, who faced several setbacks, including penalties and frustrating qualifying conditions, before eventually pulling off a spectacular comeback.

The incident that sparked Piquet’s frustration occurred during the rain-affected qualifying session, which was delayed until Sunday due to adverse weather. During Q2, Lance Stroll crashed, but the stewards waited around 45 seconds before signaling a red flag. This delay prevented Verstappen from completing his lap, resulting in his elimination from Q2. Due to his pre-existing grid penalty for an engine change, Verstappen ultimately had to start the race from 16th place, further complicating his weekend.

Following the session, Verstappen expressed his disappointment, telling Sky Sports, “The car hits the wall, it needs to be a straight red. I don’t understand why it takes 30, 40 seconds for a red flag to come out. It’s ridiculous.”

Sharing her partner’s frustration, Piquet posted her thoughts on Instagram, sarcastically applauding the FIA with, “Waiting 40 seconds to put out the red flag 馃憦馃憦馃憦 well done FIA,” accompanied by a photo of a visibly disheartened Verstappen after the qualifying outcome.

Despite these setbacks, Verstappen showcased resilience, mounting an impressive drive from 17th place on the grid to a strong finish, bringing him closer to securing his fourth consecutive Formula 1 title.
