FIA Introduces Stricter Penalties for Driver Misconduct Amid Controversy

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has recently implemented new guidelines aimed at curtailing driver misconduct in Formula 1, eliciting mixed reactions from the racing community. These regulations, outlined in the updated International Sporting Code, significantly amplify penalties for infractions such as the use of inappropriate language and gestures during official engagements.

The FIA’s definition of misconduct encompasses a broad spectrum of behaviors deemed detrimental to the sport’s integrity, including verbal and non-verbal actions that offend its values. Under the revised rules, drivers face escalating fines and suspensions for repeated offenses: a first-time breach warrants a hefty €40,000 fine, followed by €80,000 and a one-race suspension for a second offense, and a staggering €120,000 fine plus further penalties for a third infraction.

This crackdown comes on the heels of several high-profile incidents involving drivers like Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, who were previously penalized for their use of inappropriate language. The Grand Prix Drivers Association (GPDA) has expressed discontent with these stringent measures, highlighting tensions between drivers and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
