Bodybuilding Icon Arnold Schwarzenegger Busts Myth Surrounding Hair Loss Due to the Usage of Creatine

In the realm of fitness and bodybuilding, creatine holds a prominent place as one of the most popular supplements, celebrated for enhancing muscle growth, strength, and overall performance. Despite its widespread acceptance, misconceptions linger, prompting Arnold Schwarzenegger to address these doubts through his newsletter, particularly focusing on the alleged link between creatine and hair loss.

Creatine, naturally produced in the human body and also found in protein-rich foods, has been a topic of both scholarly study and gym folklore. Schwarzenegger, a long-time advocate for fitness and health, refers to the 1990s as a turning point for creatine’s reputation in the fitness community. Recently, responding to a follower’s concern, Schwarzenegger shed light on the myths surrounding creatine, especially regarding hair loss.

The concern originated from a study in 2009 which suggested that creatine supplementation could increase dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels—a hormone linked to hair loss. Schwarzenegger clarified, “After more than one thousand studies, research suggests there is little reason to believe that creatine causes hair loss.” He further explained that the study in question only observed minimal changes in DHT levels, which were insufficient to impact hair follicle health or cause hair loss. 

Moreover, Schwarzenegger highlighted that DHT levels pertinent to hair loss need to be measured at the hair follicle, not just in the bloodstream, underlining a significant distinction in how the body processes and reacts to hormones.

In his continued efforts to educate his followers, Schwarzenegger also addressed another common myth regarding creatine—bloating. He referenced a study with 266 participants who were divided into two groups, one of which supplemented with creatine while engaging in resistance exercise. The results demonstrated not only an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in fat content but also improved hydration, which helped reduce cramping, heat illness, muscle tightness, and muscle strains.

By dispelling myths and backing his statements with scientific research, Arnold Schwarzenegger remains a trusted voice in the fitness community, advocating for informed and safe supplement use. His advice underscores the importance of choosing high-quality supplements and understanding their benefits and limitations, ensuring his ‘village’ of followers can make educated decisions about their health and fitness routines.
