BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS: Checo Pérez Invests $7.5 Million to Turn Abandoned Area Into Activity Center for Homeless Youth in His Native Mexico

Formula 1 star Sergio “Checo” Pérez has once again proven that his impact goes far beyond the racetrack. In an inspiring act of generosity and commitment to his community, the Mexican driver has invested $7.5 million USD of his own fortune to transform an abandoned industrial site in Guadalajara, Jalisco, into a state-of-the-art activity and support center for homeless and at-risk youth.

The initiative, which is being called Centro Checo, will serve as a safe space for young people aged 12 to 21 who are living on the streets or facing extreme poverty and family violence. The facility is set to offer educational programs, sports activities, mental health support, job training, and temporary housing — all completely free of charge.

A Personal Mission

In a press conference held over the weekend, Pérez explained that the project is a deeply personal one.

“I’ve been incredibly blessed in my life and career, but I know that not everyone gets the same opportunities. Growing up in Guadalajara, I saw firsthand the struggles that many young people face. I made a promise to myself: if I ever had the chance, I would come back and help,” he said, visibly emotional.

Checo added that Centro Checo is not just a donation, but a long-term commitment. The project will be operated in partnership with several NGOs and social workers from the local government. The center is expected to serve over 2,000 young people annually once it is fully operational in early 2026.

Features of the Center

The 20,000-square-meter space will include:

  • Classrooms and computer labs for tutoring, literacy programs, and vocational training

  • A multi-sport complex with basketball courts, a small soccer stadium, and gym facilities

  • A counseling center offering psychological support, addiction recovery programs, and trauma therapy

  • Dormitory-style housing with capacity for up to 100 youth at a time

  • Community gardens and kitchens, where youth will learn about nutrition, cooking, and sustainability

Architects behind the project say the design is based on sustainability, inclusivity, and healing. Local materials and solar power will be used throughout the facility.

A Role Model Beyond F1

Checo Pérez, currently racing for Red Bull Racing in Formula 1, has built a reputation not only as a top-tier athlete but also as a philanthropist. His foundation, Fundación Checo Pérez, has previously supported pediatric hospitals, educational scholarships, and food banks across Mexico.

This new initiative, however, is by far his most ambitious.

“When people ask me what my proudest moment is, it’s not winning a Grand Prix,” Checo said. “It’s moments like this — when I can give back.”

A Country Celebrates

News of Pérez’s investment has sparked an outpouring of admiration across Mexico and Latin America. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of gratitude and pride. The hashtags #GraciasCheco and #OrgulloMexicano have trended nationwide.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also praised the initiative during a morning press conference, saying:

“Checo is a great athlete, but even more, he’s a great human being. He is setting an example that all Mexicans, especially our youth, can look up to.”

Looking Ahead

The groundbreaking ceremony for Centro Checo is scheduled for July 2025, with construction expected to take 12 months. Pérez says he will personally oversee the progress during his offseason and plans to visit regularly once it opens.

With this heartfelt gesture, Checo Pérez is not only changing lives — he’s redefining what it means to be a champion.
