Barry McGuigan Outlines 4 Strategic Options for Anthony Joshua’s Next Fight and Recommends the Best Path Forward

Anthony Joshua is once again looking to rebuild his career after a defeat.

Joshua was unsuccessful in his bid to regain the world heavyweight title when he was stopped in the fifth round by IBF Champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September.

‘AJ’ is set to decide whether to have an immediate rematch with Dubois or look elsewhere for his next opponent, with the likes of Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder mentioned as potentials.

Hall of Fame inductee Barry McGuigan has laid out four options for Joshua in his column for The Mirror, including a drastic one.

“Anthony Joshua is said to be weighing three possible opponents after his crushing defeat to Daniel Dubois, one of whom is Dubois himself.

My son Shane, who trained Dubois for two years, is an advocate of the latter. The other options are Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. There is, however, a fourth, which I think he should take. Retirement.”

McGuigan then explained why he feels retirement should be the decision.

“Not only is he carrying the physical wear and tear associated with heavy losses, there is mental scarring too, increasing the risk of the same outcome repeating. That said, he has more than earned the right to try to set the record straight if he so wishes.”

If Joshua was to face Fury, McGuigan says he wouldn’t be interested in the contest.

“Should Usyk beat Fury again, as I believe he will, what would Fury v Joshua be worth? Not a lot for me. Still less a fight with a shot Wilder. They might attract the crowds but in legacy terms they would mean nothing.”

Joshua and team are expected to make a decision soon, with the current feeling that the rematch with Dubois is top priority.
