Barcelona Seeks New Loan to Activate Nico Williams’ Release Clause.
Barcelona is currently in talks with banks to secure a new loan aimed at activating the release clause of Nico Williams.
It is no secret that Barcelona’s primary objective to strengthen their attack for the upcoming season is Nico Williams. The club’s sports department and new coach Hansi Flick have concluded that signing Nico Williams for the left wing is essential.
This move comes at the request of Hansi Flick, who has insisted on having two natural wingers, with the right wing belonging to Lamine Yamal. Signing Nico Williams also serves to accommodate Lamine Yamal’s wish to play alongside the Basque forward at Barcelona.
The relationship between Lamine and Nico goes beyond being EURO 2024 champions. Williams acts as a mentor and protector for Yamal. However, Barcelona faces significant financial challenges, causing delays in the deal for Nico.
Nico Williams’ contract with Bilbao includes a release clause of €58 million, a substantial amount for Barcelona. Bilbao has made it clear that they will not negotiate the transfer in any form other than activating the release clause, ensuring they receive the full amount upfront rather than in installments, which is a common practice to avoid financial fair play violations.
Spanish media reports that Barcelona is working hard to secure bank loans to sign Nico Williams. La Vanguardia, a leading Catalan newspaper, revealed that Barcelona has been negotiating for a €100 million loan. Recently, Cadena SER also reported that the club is seeking a financial partner to help pay Williams’ release clause.
If Barcelona successfully secures the loan, they will also need to reduce their wage bill to register the 22-year-old forward, who was named the best player in the EURO 2024 final. Nico Williams’ salary is expected to be high, so Barcelona must offload players with significant incomes. Raphinha (€12.5 million) and Ferran Torres (€10 million) are the most likely candidates to be sold.
According to AS, sporting director Deco met with Nico’s agent, Felix Tainta, in Zaragoza last Wednesday. The finalization of this transfer now depends on Barcelona securing the necessary loan.
By addressing financial challenges and making strategic moves, Barcelona aims to bring Nico Williams to Camp Nou, strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.
