Aryna Sabalenka Scores Second Straight Us Open Final, Edges Emma Navarro

Aryna Sabalenka’s exceptional summer continues as she reaches her second straight US Open final, defeating Emma Navarro 6-3, 7-6 (2) on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The world No. 2, who finished as runner-up in 2023 to Coco Gauff, aims to secure a complete sweep of the hard-court majors in 2024. Sabalenka’s victory over Navarro came after a fierce battle lasting one hour and 30 minutes, with Navarro showing a strong late-game performance.

This was the third encounter between Sabalenka and Navarro in 2024. Navarro had won their first match at the BNP Paribas Open, but Sabalenka avenged that loss at Roland Garros. Navarro has had a standout season, reaching the fourth round in Paris and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon before performing impressively at her home Grand Slam.

Navarro, who is set to debut in the Top 10, continued her impressive form by defeating Gauff and former world No. 2 Paula Badosa to reach the semifinals.

Sabalenka entered the match with a 10-match winning streak, having recently clinched the Cincinnati Open title with wins over Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula. She had dropped just one set in her previous five matches at the US Open, including a swift 73-minute win over Zheng Qinwen in the quarterfinals.

The match began with Sabalenka quickly taking a 2-0 lead as Navarro struggled early. However, Navarro recovered her form, leveling the first set at 2-2 before Sabalenka regained control to secure the set in under 40 minutes.

In the second set, both players held serve until Sabalenka broke Navarro to lead by two games. Despite Navarro’s resurgence, which included saving break points and winning three consecutive games, Sabalenka forced a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Sabalenka overcame an early deficit with strategic play and powerful serves, ultimately securing victory with a well-placed volley and a decisive net play.

Sabalenka will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula and 2023 semifinalist Karolina Muchova. She previously faced Pegula in Cincinnati and Muchova in the 2023 Roland Garros semifinals. Sabalenka aims to capture her first US Open title and her third Grand Slam overall.
