Researchers from the Chichester and District Archaeology Society have recently uncovered a significant find in Chichester’s Priory Park: the remains of a military causeway or bridge. Led by Chichester District Council’s archaeologist, James Kenny, this excavation, commenced on May 21 and concluding on June 3, has garnered considerable attention.

This excavation marks the seventh led by Kenny in Priory Park. “Kenny further noted the significance of this discovery, stating, “This is an exciting find, as it provides a glimpse into what would have been a very impressive military defensive system, unseen since the Middle Ages.” Kenny emphasized the bridge’s solid construction, stating, “Norman soldiers would have used this bridge to cross over the masonry on foot, by horse, or with carts, then removed the beams after use to prevent invaders from crossing to the motte.”
