The Kansas City Chiefs finally won a game by multiple scores on Sunday, beating the Cleveland Browns 21-7. Despite winning the game handily, Chiefs fans had a scare when Patrick Mahomes limped off the field with an apparent ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

Fortunately, Mahomes’ injury doesn’t sound major. After the game, Andy Reid told reporters, “Patrick’s right ankle has been hurt. It’s not broken, but it’s sore. He’ll get started on the rehab part of it as we go. We’ll just have to see how he does down the road here.”

Reid decided to have the Chiefs go for it on a 4th&3 with a little over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. In real time, this decision was a questionable one, given how the Chiefs had been dominating the Browns.

With how the game was going, the likelihood of the Browns scoring any points from deep in their own territory was low, so a punt in this situation would have been the smart decision. Even so, the reason Reid most likely decided to go for it was to get live game reps in fourth-down scenarios to be ready for the playoffs.

While that’s not terrible reasoning, it does put your players who are already beat up at an increased risk of injury. Luckily, Mahomes’ ankle injury didn’t end up being worse.

Nevertheless, Mahomes dealing with an ankle injury with two games in the next ten days is not great. Heading into Houston and Pittsburgh hobbled could lead to Mahomes taking more hits from the vaunted fronts.

The best-case scenario for Mahomes and the Chiefs is that they lock up the number one seed in the next two weeks so Mahomes and the team could have a couple of weeks’ rest before the divisional round of the playoffs.
