Amazon founder Jeff Bezos linked with stunning move to invest his $230bn fortune into sporting giants
The American businessman could purchase a huge club.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos could be set to purchase a huge sports club, according to reports.
Bezos, 60, has a reported net worth of $239B (£197B) and is the third richest man in the world according to Forbes.
Soon, some of his hefty fortune could be used to purchase an iconic sports club.
Of course, given the riches involved with top-level sport, most owners are billionaires rather than millionaires.
According to the Mail, the American has “emerged as a contender” to buy NFL team the New York Jets.
Last year, he tried to purchase the Washington Commanders but was outbid by Josh Harris, who purchased the club for $4.7b (£3.9 B).
However, it is thought that Bezos has held a long-term goal of eventually buying an NFL team.
The Jets, owned by Woody Johnson, are valued at $6.9B (£5.7B), according to Forbes.
So this would hardly dent the huge funds available to Bezos if he were to complete the purchase.
The current owner, Johnson, purchased the club for $635m in 2000. There is no current suggestion that the businessman is looking to sell at this time, but he may be forced to take a step back soon.
The 77-year-old was the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2021 during Donald Trump’s Presidency.
Johnson is expected to be involved in the new administration next year. As a result, he may have to take a step back from the day-to-day operations at the New York-based club.
It is thought that his brother, Christopher Johnson, would take on the role. But a future sale could be possible.
On the field, things are not going too well for the Jets.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is struggling for form, with the side having won just three of their 13 matches so far this season.
As a result of their poor form, coach Robert Saleh was sacked in October. Jeff Ulbrich was announced as interim head coach until the end of the current season.
Last time out, the Jets lost 32-26 at the Miami Dolphins.
If Bezos does not purchase the Jets, Elon Musk has also been linked with a potential move for the club.
