Fear not Minnesota Vikings fans, head coach Kevin O’Connell isn’t going anywhere. On Tuesday afternoon, the franchise announced they have agreed to a multi-year contract extension to continue as head coach of the Vikings.

The terms of the extension were not disclosed, but it’s a huge win for the Vikings to get O’Connell locked in for the long-term, as he was set to enter the final year of his contract in 2025.

Kevin O’Connell agrees to contract extension with Minnesota Vikings

After starting his Vikings tenure at 34-17, there were reports of teams being interested in a trade for O’Connell. He shot that down quickly and reiterated his desire to stay in Minnesota at his season-ending press conference.

The Vikings sent out a press release announcing the move with a long statement from O’Connell.

“It is an absolute honor to continue leading the Minnesota Vikings,” said O’Connell. “Holding this prestigious position is something I never take for granted, and I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Wilf family for their unwavering belief in what we are building together. I also want to thank Leah and our incredible children; their love and support allow me to perform this job at a high level. And none of this would be possible without the dedication of our coaches, players and support staff. I can’t wait to get back to work with all of them as we continue to build upon the high standard we’ve set and the positive environment we’ve created.

“To Vikings fans, you are the best in the NFL. There is no greater joy than leading our team in front of you each Sunday and experiencing the home field advantage you create. I’m thrilled for the years ahead and will continue to give you everything I have as we pursue a Super Bowl for the state of Minnesota.”

Now that O’Connell is locked up long-term, the Vikings will now turn their attention to general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, as he was also given a four-year contract when he was hired with the Vikings in 2022.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that those discussions have already begun, which is a huge deal for the future of the franchise. The Wilf family has historically waited until the final year of their coaches and front office contracts are up to give them extensions and they lived up to that here.
