Anthony Joshua‘s chances of a super fight with Tyson Fury next look to be up in smoke after he was stopped by Daniel Dubois in front of almost 100,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
‘AJ’ looked off-pace from the start and a lazy defence saw Dubois – who entered and exited the ring as IBF World Heavyweight Champion – capitalise and knock him down in the first.
Other than some spots of offence, it was mostly a survival mission for Joshua from then on. After his best success of the fight in the fifth round, Dubois snatched momentum back with the knockout blow.
Joshua’s plans are now fully derailed. Pre-fight, much of the talk was around him winning to set up a fight with the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs Fury rematch in December. Of course, the most lucrative turn of events would be both ‘AJ’ and Fury coming out victorious for what could have been the biggest fight in boxing.
That’s no longer the case and won’t be again. Fury now has a new focus, revealing in a clip shared by Fight Hub TV that he now has eyes on Dubois after Usyk 2.
“It’s heavyweight boxing boys, s**t happens. It could’ve been me, it could’ve been you, it could’ve been anybody … I’ve got to fight my man, the f***ing rabbit, and I’m gonna take all my belts back once again. I guarantee you. When I fight Usyk in December and beat him I’ll regain all the belts I should never have lost, and then I’ll fight Dubois and take the [IBF] off him as well. That’s my plan.”
Of course, Usyk will have other plans and has already been called out for a rematch by Dubois after beating him by stoppage last year.
Promoter Eddie Hearn has also revealed that Joshua will now consider activating a contractual rematch clause to run it back with the 27-year-old, who will be more confident than ever as one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the division.
