In December 2023, the New Jersey Devils showcased their support for the LGBTQ+ community during their annual Pride Night, cleverly navigating the NHL’s ban on themed jerseys during on-ice activities. The league had prohibited players from wearing specialty jerseys during warm-ups or games, a policy implemented after certain players declined to participate in previous Pride Night events.
To honor Pride Night without violating NHL regulations, the Devils arranged for players to don custom-designed Pride jerseys upon arrival at the Prudential Center, prior to taking the ice. These jerseys, crafted by local artist Kathryn Kennedy, symbolized the “coming out” experience within the LGBTQ+ community, featuring abstract designs that represented breaking barriers to live openly and authentically.
The initiative extended beyond player attire. The Devils’ mascot proudly wore a Pride jersey on the ice, and several players, including Curtis Lazar, utilized Pride Tape on their sticks during warm-ups. These actions underscored the team’s commitment to inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Following the event, the autographed Pride jerseys were auctioned, with proceeds benefiting Hyacinth, New Jersey’s largest and first HIV/AIDS service provider. This charitable effort highlighted the Devils’ dedication to both celebrating diversity and supporting vital community services.
The New Jersey Devils’ innovative approach to Pride Night exemplifies how sports organizations can uphold league policies while still expressing solidarity with marginalized communities. By finding creative solutions, the Devils reinforced their message of inclusivity and respect, setting a precedent for other teams to follow.
