Golden Knights’ Prospects Win Gold And Silver At World Juniors
Vegas Golden Knights prospect Trevor Connelly won gold with Team USA at the World Juniors, and Tuomas Uronen won silver with Finland.
A Golden Knights prospect was guaranteed a medal when Team USA beat Czechia in the semi-final, and Finland defeated Sweden, setting up a rematch between the two teams that met in the preliminary round.
The first matchup between the two teams saw Finland hail victorious, thanks to an overtime goal from Uronen.
Heading into the final, the USA were still considered the favourites but the start did not indicate that. Finland got out a 1-0 lead courtesy of Jesse Kiiskinen before James Hagens answered back for the Americans. Just about a minute later, Uronen beat American goalie Trey Augustine in a similar fashion.
Finland took a two-goal lead early in the second period but the Americans climbed back into the game late in the middle frame to tie things at three.
The third period solved nothing, forcing the game to head to overtime where Teddy Stiga, a Nashville Predators 2024 second-round pick scored the Golden Goal.
Connelly finished the tournament with a goal and four points in seven games, winning his first gold medal at an IIHF event. Connelly can return next year where he’ll play a larger role with the Americans at both even strength and on the power play.
Uronen’s development has been a pleasant surprise for the Golden Knights. The 2023 sixth-round pick is enjoying a great year in the OHL and carried that confidence into this tournament, putting up two goals and three points in seven games. Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, he’s aged out of the tournament and won’t get the opportunity to win gold.
