FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem Faces Backlash Amid Demands for Transparency

The world of Formula 1 is no stranger to controversy, but this time, the drama extends beyond the racing circuit and into the administrative corridors of the sport’s governing body. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), has become the focus of heated criticism and demands for increased transparency. The tension has escalated following high-profile departures within the FIA and a bold call for reform from the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA).

The controversy began to brew after the unexpected exit of key figures, including race director Niels Wittich. Adding fuel to the fire, the GPDA issued an open letter demanding significant management changes and clearer accountability regarding the use of fines collected from teams and drivers. However, Ben Sulayem’s response has been nothing short of resolute. Speaking to Motorsport.com ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, the FIA president dismissed the drivers’ demands, emphasizing that such issues were not within their remit.

“It’s not their business,” Ben Sulayem stated, referring to the GPDA’s calls for transparency. “With all due respect, I’m a driver. I respect drivers. Let them concentrate on what they do best, which is racing.” His firm stance made it clear that he is unwilling to succumb to external pressures, whether from drivers or the media.

One of the most contentious issues is the allocation of fines collected by the FIA. Critics, including some drivers, have questioned the lack of transparency in how these funds are used. Ben Sulayem responded by highlighting the FIA’s investments in motorsport development, safety initiatives, and global outreach. According to him, over €10.3 million was spent last year on foundational programs, including 70 automotive safety projects and financial assistance for 85 countries.

“I think that’s a lot of money,” Ben Sulayem said, defending the organization’s financial decisions as evidence of their commitment to the sport’s growth and safety. Yet, his refusal to provide detailed breakdowns has done little to quell the unrest among stakeholders.

Amid growing criticism, Ben Sulayem has faced allegations ranging from sexism to mismanagement and interference in race results. While he denies all accusations, claiming they lack substantive evidence, his dismissive attitude has sparked debate about his leadership approach. In his interview, the president was unapologetic, even mocking his critics. “I think I live for free in their brain; they give me a nice apartment there,” he quipped.

The president’s approach to media scrutiny has also drawn attention. He openly criticized the press, asserting that he does not owe explanations to the public. “Why do I have to answer everything? I have a responsibility to my members and to the sport, not to the media,” he stated.

Despite the turbulence, Ben Sulayem remains optimistic about the FIA’s trajectory. He highlighted the organization’s growth, citing the addition of 64 new employees in 2023 and plans to onboard 92 more in 2024. “Do you know what? I’m very optimistic about the FIA. I’m very happy with our position now. I can only see good things,” he concluded.

The question remains whether this optimism will resonate with the wider F1 community. Critics argue that Ben Sulayem’s insular approach risks alienating drivers and fans, while supporters believe his focus on internal management is necessary for the organization’s long-term stability.

As Formula 1 continues to grow in global popularity, the pressure on its governing body to adapt to modern expectations of transparency and accountability will only intensify. Whether Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s unwavering stance will strengthen the FIA or deepen divisions within the sport is a narrative still unfolding. Fans and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how the president navigates these challenging times
