The 2024 Italian Grand Prix was one to forget for Max Verstappen, as the Red Bull driver endured a challenging race, finishing in sixth place. While Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc delighted the Tifosi with a victory at Monza, Verstappen’s struggles on the track led to a series of tense radio exchanges with his team.

After a disappointing qualifying session where he placed seventh, Verstappen found it difficult to make significant progress during the race, ultimately finishing in P6. A delayed 6.2-second pit stop further added to his woes, as his RB20 car battled issues with balance and straight-line speed. The defending champion’s frustration was evident when he voiced his concerns over the team radio, addressing the situation bluntly.

“Can the people in the background please be awake? I know this is a s**t position, but it’s important,” Verstappen said, signaling his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and urging them to stay alert despite the challenging circumstances.

This was not the only tense moment on the radio for the three-time world champion. After the race, Verstappen delivered another pointed message to his team, summarizing the day’s difficulties.

“Yeah, tough race. Everything went against us. Not the power we wanted, not the pace, not the pit stops. But yeah, we have to work hard to change the car around.”

In response, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner offered an apology to the Dutchman, acknowledging the team’s shortcomings during the race. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, also had a challenging day, finishing in the same position he started, P8.

Meanwhile, as Leclerc secured his second win of the season, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris completed the podium in second and third, respectively. Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton followed in P4 and P5, while George Russell, Alex Albon, and Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10.

Lando Norris’s second-place finish at Monza allowed him to close the gap in the Drivers’ Championship, now trailing Verstappen by 62 points. With 241 points in 16 races compared to Verstappen’s 303, Norris has outperformed the Dutchman in consecutive races.

McLaren’s strong showing has also intensified the Constructors’ Championship battle. The team is now just eight points behind Red Bull, with 438 points compared to Red Bull’s 446. Ferrari is also in contention, sitting in third place with 407 points.

As the teams head to Baku for the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Red Bull and Verstappen face an uphill battle. Given their recent struggles with top speed and race pace, they will not be entering the race as firm favorites over McLaren, who have shown consistent form in recent weeks.
