Eagles Face Defensive Challenge: Should They Pursue Von Miller to Turn Things Around?
The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2023 NFL season with high expectations, but their defense has become one of their most glaring weaknesses. After a bye in Week 5, the Eagles are preparing to face the 1-4 Cleveland Browns. However, to increase their chances of success and improve defensive performance, the Eagles need to address their struggles in the pass rush.
Statistics reveal that the Eagles have only recorded six sacks so far this season, ranking second-to-last in the league. Additionally, their overall defense is concerning, sitting at 27th in total defense and allowing opponents to average 5.0 yards per carry. These figures raise serious questions about the team’s effectiveness.
The Eagles attempted to bolster their pass rush by signing Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51 million deal during the offseason. However, Huff’s performance in the first four games has been underwhelming. He has only managed two tackles and has failed to record any quarterback hits or sacks.
Amid these struggles, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has proposed a bold solution: the Eagles should consider trading for Buffalo Bills veteran pass rusher Von Miller. Miller, a celebrated Pro Bowler, previously played under Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. While Miller is suspended until Week 8, his ability to pressure quarterbacks could fill a critical gap for the Eagles.
“The Eagles probably shouldn’t be in the business of adding aging defenders,” Benjamin wrote. “But they badly need a pass rush, and Miller, though suspended, was a Pro Bowler under Vic Fangio in Denver.”
Von Miller has consistently proven his value over multiple seasons with his speed, power, and ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. His pivotal role in leading the Denver Broncos to victory in Super Bowl 50 only adds to his reputation. Although he’s now 34 years old, Miller still possesses the skills to make a significant impact on the Eagles, particularly in improving their pass rush.
If the Eagles decide to acquire Von Miller, it could provide a massive boost to their struggling defense and inject renewed confidence into the team for the remainder of the season. However, with Miller’s hefty salary and the risks associated with his age, it’s not an easy decision.
The question remains: Are the Eagles willing to take the gamble to rescue their faltering defense, or will they explore other options? The answer will unfold in the coming weeks.
