UEFA may be compelled to take action and issue a penalty after the conclusion of the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

The final four teams for Euro 2024 were determined early on July 7. Host nation Germany was eliminated by Spain, while Portugal fell to France.

In another match, England secured a semi-final spot after defeating Switzerland in a penalty shootout and will face the Netherlands, who came from behind to overcome Turkey.

There was significant controversy before the final round of the quarter-finals. England managed to avoid a dangerous situation as UEFA confirmed that midfielder Jude Bellingham would be suspended for improper conduct following their victory over Slovakia.

UEFA’s decision has infuriated Turkish fans, as star defender Merih Demiral was banned for two matches for a similar gesture during their win over Austria, causing him to miss the loss to the Netherlands.
In response to this penalty, thousands of Turkish fans mimicked the ‘wolf’ gesture before the match against the Netherlands, which could prompt UEFA to take action against the Turkish Football Federation.
This gesture is associated with Turkish nationalists and the extremist organization Ulku Ocaklari, more widely known as the ‘Grey Wolves.’
The European Football Association (UEFA) has issued numerous penalties for fan behavior throughout the tournament. Denmark was fined for a fan holding a sign saying “F*ck UEFA,” while Albania and Serbia were penalized for “conveying provocative messages inappropriate for a sporting event.”
UEFA stated they banned Demiral for “not adhering to general conduct principles, violating basic rules of decency, using sports events to convey non-sporting messages, and damaging the honor of football.”
The Turkish Football Federation President, Mehmet Buyukeksi, accused UEFA of “double standards” in banning Demiral.
He said, “Compared to the penalties and suspensions for far more severe actions, including racist behavior in the stands, this two-match ban is completely disproportionate.”
